Desprat Heraldry: Exploring the Family Coat of Arms

Originally from France, the Desprat family was descended from Carlos Martel and the Counts of Guise. This lineage is cited by Mossén Jaime Febrer and Onofre Esquerdo.

Mossén Jaime Febrer, in his Trovas, mentions: "Pedro Desprats came (to Valencia) with one hundred Almugavars, whom he recruited in the Urgell region, all very agile and courageous men, and paid for them at his own expense. King Jaime made him a Templar, as the tests revealed that he was of noble blood from the Counts of Guise, and a descendant of Carlos Martel, truly a fierce hammer against the Moors." The inheritance continued in Orihuela, where he left his legacy.

A descendant of the same family was Cardinal Desprats.

Garma y Duran states that the Desprat family had a solar house in Sabassona. Other houses were located in Seva (Barcelona), San Esteban de Bas (Girona), Arbós (Tarragona), and in the cities of Barcelona and Lleida.

In Aragon, there was a solar house in Alcalá de la Selva (Teruel), owned by Pedro Desprats, documented in the Aragonese Fogueración of 1495.

Ramón Desprat from Seva (Barcelona) lived in Vich (Barcelona) from 1266 to 1278. G. Desprats or Des Prats was a resident of Lleida in 1344. Berenguer Desprats resided in Moncofar (Castellón) in 1254. Berthomeu Desprats was a resident of Onda (Castellón) in 1379. Nicolau Desprats and Pere Desprats were residents of Valencia from 1306 to 1316. Bernat Desprat resided in Cocentaina (Alicante) in 1396. G. Desprat was one of the first settlers of Orihuela (Alicante) between 1300-1314.

Guillermo Desprats, born in Arbós and Canon of the city of Tortosa (both in Tarragona), lawyer of Oto de Moncada, Bishop of Tortosa, was authorized by the ecclesiastical arm to act in the courts of the Principality of Catalonia in 1421. He was the son of Eimerico Desprats y de Vallcorba, Doncel de Arbós, Lord of Morell y de la Quadra de Vallcorba, owner of the Palace of Santa Ana, Captain and Military Governor of the Archdiocese of Tarragona, Veguer of Tarragona by Archbishop Pedro de Urrea, and of Leonor, his wife.

Gregorio Desprats de Bigues y de Icart, Knight, Doncel del Vallés, was authorized by the military arm to participate in the Cortes of the Principality of Catalonia in 1599. He was the son of Gerónimo Desprats de Bigues, Doncel del Vallés, Assistant at the Cortes de Monzón in 1563, and paternal grandson of Gerónimo Desprats de Bigues, Doncel del Vallés, Assistant at the Cortes de Monzón in 1528.

Francisco Desprats de Bigues, Carlán de Llussá, was elevated to Knight of the Golden Spur of the Principality of Catalonia by King Carlos I of Austria on January 19, 1520.
